This work originated as a response to the walled garden at
Outpost, which is reminiscent of historical paradise gardens. Through my research I have come to understand the walled garden as a site of utopian desire, longing for paradise or perfection, a lush and verdant oasis from the harsh exterior conditions. The installation "Nowhere more than here right now" takes place in the freezing snowdrifts of winter, the seasonal opposite of this particular site of desire. I have made sculptural plants and flowers out of wire, glue and paper that are protected by glass cloches. The cloches are also vague references to the wunderkammern, or cabinet of curiosities, with its objects that offer strangeness and otherness, cloistered into vitrines for safekeeping and scrutinization.
The paperwork/drawings consist of the remnants from which the elements of the sculptures have been cut. The plants, herbs and flowers all have historical meaning such as charity, lust, greed, mystery, and on and on. This current- and ongoing- body of work allows me to reflect on poetic ideas of desire, negation and hope.
